“Hello,” Alma said in her soft, demure voice. “How nice to see you both.”

Isaac, ever the gentleman, came over and shook Amos’s hand. “Good evening, Deputy.” He turned and gave me a little bow. “And you, too, Miss Ivy.”

“Hi there, Isaac. Getting a little dinner before church?” Amos asked.

Isaac helped Alma off with her coat and held out her chair. “Yes. It seemed the thing to do. Alma was going to cook for us, but I decided she needed a night out.” He smiled and took off his own coat. “But I must tell you that she is a culinary master. I have thoroughly enjoyed all her meals.” He patted his small stomach. “I might actually be putting on weight.”

Isaac was a wisp of a man. Even a pound would help. As strong as the wind was sometimes in Winter Break, I was afraid he was going to be carried away one day.

Suddenly, the doors of the kitchen swung open. Bert Bird was bringing out two plates of steaming food. Bonnie followed behind with a bread basket. Either we were being treated to a very small parade or Amos and I were getting ready to be presented with our dinners. With all the flair he could manage, Bert deposited our plates in front of us.

“Veal Marsala,” he said loudly. “I’m glad someone in Winter Break is willing to take a risk. Bon appétit!” Then he whirled away, leaving Amos and me the center of attention at Ruby’s.

Bonnie set the bread basket down and turned to Isaac and Alma. “What’cha havin’?” she asked.

Isaac looked at me and smiled. Then he raised his eyebrows at Alma. “I believe we will have the Veal Marsala, too. It looks wonderful.”

Bonnie winked at him and yelled to Bert, who was standing in front of the doors to the kitchen, watching us. “Two more Italian moo moos!” Bert flashed us a big grin and disappeared into the kitchen.

While Amos said a prayer over our food, I silently told God that I had no intention of being deceitful, but I was determined to say the Marsala was good, no matter what it tasted like. Amos and I speared a forkful of veal, mushrooms, and sauce and stuck it in our mouths at the same time. The explosion of garlic and butter sauce, along with the tender medallion of veal, was incredible. “Delicious!” I said. I had half a mind to stand up and give a review so everyone could get back to their own lives.

Amos nodded, smiled big, and took another bite. I think he was just trying to get out of saying anything, but the gusto he displayed seemed to work. Everyone went back to their conversations. In the next few minutes, I heard several people call Bonnie over and ask if it was too late to change their orders. The Veal Marsala was a hit, and Ruby’s had a new favorite. I couldn’t help wonder if Bert would still be here someday when Ruby was gone, cooking the old standbys but bringing some new taste treats to the town of Winter Break.
